Carl Fillion
Carl Fillion has a degree in set design from the Conservatoire d’art dramatique de Québec, where he also taught to new set designers from 1992 to 2002. As well as at the National Theater School of Canada.
Carl has worked with many prominent companies and directors around the world and has a long list of near fifty set design creations for theatre, multimedia show, circus, exhibition and opera credits to his name, which most of them as been seen around the world.
In 1993, Carl Fillion created the set for the groundbreaking show Seven Streams of the River Ota, becoming one of the most important collaborators of Robert Lepage for whom he signed the set design of more than eighteen different productions including recently Der Ring Des Nibelungen at the Metropolitan Opera of New-York, the new theatrical creation of Needles and Opium in world tour, Hamlet Collage at the Theatre of Nations (Moscow), Totem, a Cirque du Soleil world touring production, The Nightingale and others fables at the Canadian Opera Company (Toronto), Aix-en-Provence, Lyon and Amsterdam.
Among his others creations are The Damnation of Faust created at the Seito Kinen Festival of Matsumoto (Japan), La Bastille of Paris and at the Metropolitan Opera (New-York), 1984 created at the Royal Opera House of London, The Rakes Progress at the opera houses of Brussels, Lyon, Madrid, San Francisco and London, Celestina staged at the Royal Dramaten Theatre in Stockholm, and more recently another production of La Celestina created at the Lliure Theatre in Barcelona, The Burial at Thebes at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin and the opera Simon Boccanegra at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona and the Grand Théâtre de Genève.
His work of creator distinguishes itself particularly by very original conceptions often using the strength of spaces in movements and the high technologies, and it quite since his beginnings. Its artistic qualities, its big understanding and its technical control are considerable assets for all the projects into whom Carl Fillon always puts a lot with so much passion.
