Andeka Gorrotxategi
Leading critics have hailed him the most important tenor to come out of the Basque Country in the last fifty years and, for many, he is the new Franco Corelli, thanks to his spinto tenor repertoire and his beautiful rich voice, which has taken him to highly prestigious stages around the world.
Born in Abadiño, Vizcaya, he began his vocal training at the Conservatory of Durango and later moved to Bilbao, Madrid, Marseille, Paris, Rome and the USA to further his training with maestros such as Agurtzane Mentxaka, Ana Begoña Hernandez, Francisco Ortiz, Elisabetta Fiorillo and Francisco Casanova. In his first foray into opera, Gorrotxategi was called the top new Spanish tenor. And now, after seven years building up his career and debuting operas, critics have again heaped praise on him after his debut as Gabriele in Simon Boccanegra, labelling him the “perfect tenor” and “with a strong and luminous voice”. He has won several competitions, such as the Jaume Aragall or the Manuel Ausensi, but it was his debut as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly in Novara 2011 that hugely boosted his career and has led him to perform at some of the world’s most important opera houses and auditoriums, such as the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, the Opéra de Lausanne, the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Felsenreitschule in Salzburg, the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, the Teatro Bellas Artes in Mexico City, the Sydney Opera House, the Semperoper in Dresden, the Opéra de Monte-Carlo and National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, among others.
He has great interest in the Spanish lyrical genre, being a regular performer at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, where in the last few seasons we have seen him in Curro Vargas Curro, El Gato Montés Rafael or La Villana Don Fabrique, and where we will soon see him in Maria del Pilar or El Caserío. He has worked with prestigious conductors such as Zubin Metha, Robberto Abbado, Miguel Ángel Gomez Martinez, Jesús Lopez Cobos, Stefano Ranzani, Danielle Callegari, Guillermo Garcia Calvo, Renato Palumbo and Óliver Díaz, to name just a few. His repertoire includes some of the leading roles written for tenors, Carmen Don José, Tosca Cavaradossi, Attila Foresto, La Fanciulla del West Dick Jonhson, I Masnadieri Carlo and Il Trovatore Manrico. What’s more, he will soon debut in Turandot, Aida and La Bohème.
