Wookyung Kim

Following his voice-studies at the Hanyang University in his home town Seoul, the young South Korean tenor came to Germany, where he was chosen to join master classes at the Academy of Music in Munich with Prof. Helmut Deutsch and others.

Wookyung Kim has been awarded prizes in various international competitions, such as First Prize in the Belvedere-Competition (Vienna), Francisco-Vias-Competition (Barcelona) and Plcido Domingo-Competition OPERALIA  in Los Angeles.

Since 2003/2004, when Wookyung Kim joined the opera company of the Sächsische Staatsoper, he has been interpreting in Dresden all major roles of his repertoire such as Tamino Zauberflöte, Don Ottavio Don Giovanni, Rodolfo La Bohème, Sänger Der Rosenkavalier, Fenton Falstaff, Ismaele Nabucco, Macduff Macbeth and Duca, Rigoletto. In 2007 he sang Beatrice di Tenda  (in concert version) with Edita Gruberova in Dresden.

In 2007 he also had his very successful debut at the Metropolitan Opera New York with Alfredo in La Traviata and debuts at the Bavarian State Opera as Tamino Die Zauberflöte, followed by his debut at Covent Garden, London with a production of Rigoletto Duca.

Highlights in 2008 and 2009 amongst others were a new production of Faust (title role) in Bordeaux, La TraviataMacbethDie Zauberflöte and La Bohème in Hamburg, Rodolfo La Bohème and Sänger Der Rosenkavalier at Covent Garden and Rodolfo at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

In 2010, in Munich State Opera the revival La Traviata Alfredo, in Dresden a new production of Faust (title rol), in Hamburg - La Bohème Rodolfo, in Santiago de Chile Macbeth Macduff, at Covent Garden London a revival of Rigoletto Duca.

In 2011 a new productioin of La Bohème Rodolfo in Tokyo (February 2011), in Santiago de Chile a new production of Simon Boccanegra (August 2011), in Dresden a new production of Un Ballo in Maschera (September/October 2011), in Munich State Opera La Boheme (December 2011) and in Toulouse a new production of La Clemenza di Tito (title rol). Among his resent and future engagements are a Revival of Otello Casio in Frankfurt, Die ZauberflöteSalome and a new production of Idomeneo in Dresden and at the Munich State Opera, La Bohème (2012); at the Berlin Deutsche Oper , Un Ballo in Maschera, alla Scala and at the Munich State Opera Macbeth Macduff, Rigoletto in Tokyo, a new production of Der Fliegender Holländer in Dresden, La Bohème in Berlín (2013); Idomeneo and Der Flying Holländer Erik in Dresde, La Bohème in Hamburg, Simone Boccanegra Gabriele Adorno at the Munich Bayerische Staatsoper and Frankfurt, La Bohème in Munich and Don Carlos in Frankfurt. 

Wookyung Kim can also be heard in concerts. Among others he did a Mozart Solo-concert under the baton Maestro James Levine with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. He sang Rossini’s Stabat Mater at the Bregenz and the Salzburg Festival. He has been doing several tours (within Germany and Europe) with the Bachakademie Stuttgart, Helmuth Rilling conducting. 

In May 2006 Wookyung Kim gave his concert debut at the Wiener Musikverein with Verdi’s Messa da Requiem under Fabio Luisi with great success.
