Rosemary Joshua
Rosemary Joshua was born in Cardiff and studied at the Welsh College of Music and Drama and at the Royal College of Music, of which she is now a Fellow.
Highlights this season and beyond include Brahms Ein Deutsches Requiem with the Boston Symphony Orchestra; Oscar in Verdi Un ballo in maschera for the Royal Opera, Covent Garden; Mendelssohn
Lobgesang with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra; Bach St John Passion with the Academy of Ancient Music and Richard Egarr at the Rheingau Festival and a programme of Purcell Arias and Duets with Sarah Connolly, Harry Bicket and The English Concert at Wigmore Hall, London.
Recent appearances have included Despina Così fan tutte with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Gustavo Dudamel; John Adams El Niño with the LPO and Vladimir Jurowski; title role in Handel Theodora on tour with the English Concert; Anne Trulove Rake's Progress and Despina Così fan tutte for the Royal Opera, Covent Garden and the title role Cunning Little Vixen; Oscar, Un ballo in maschera and Helen in the world première of Manfred Trojahn Orest for Netherlands Opera.
Rosemary has also appeared at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, La Scala, Milan, Opernhaus Zurich, Glyndebourne Festival, Bayerische Staatsoper, Welsh National Opera and La Monnaie, Brussels.
Since making her debut at the Aix-en-Provence Festival as Angelica Orlando, it is above all as a Handel singer that Rosemary Joshua has built her international reputation. She has sung Angelica for Bayerische Staatsoper and Covent Garden; Poppea Agrippina at Cologne, La Monnaie and Théâtre des Champs-Elysées; Cleopatra Giulio Cesare for Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and Netherlands Opera; Ginevra Ariodante at San Diego and in Moscow and the title role Semele to critical acclaim for the Aix-en-Provence and Innsbruck Festivals, Flanders Opera, Cologne, at the BBC Proms and for English National Opera. Most recently she has sung Partenope for ENO as well as Nitocris Belshazzar for Deutsche Staatsoper, Théâtre du Capitole,Toulouse and at the Innsbruck and Aix-en Provence Festivals.
Recent concert highlights include Bach Cantatas with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks and Giovanni Antonini; Nitocris Belshazzar on tour with Les Arts Florissants and William Christie; Sandrina La finta giardiniera on tour with the AAM and Richard Egarr; Ilia Idomeneo at the Edinburgh Festival with the SCO and Sir Roger Norrington; Elijah at the BBC Proms with the Gabrieli Consort and Paul McCreesh and Mahler Symphony No 4 on tour with L’Orchestre des Champs-Elysées and Philippe Herreweghe.
Recordings include a solo disc of Purcell Harmonia Sacra with Les Talens Lyriques and Christophe Rousset; the title roles in Handel Partenope and Semele, Romilda Serse and Emilia Flavio with The Early Opera Company and Christian Curnyn; the title role in Handel Esther with Laurence Cummings; Angelica and Nitocris Belshazzar with Les Arts Florissants and William Christie; Saul, Venus and Adonis and Dido and Aeneas all with
