Peter Hoare
Peter Hoare was born in Bradford and studied percussion at the Huddersfield School of Music. Following several years as a freelance percussionist, Peter commenced his professional singing career in 1992.
Peter began his operatic career at Welsh National Opera where his roles have included Bacchus Ariadne auf Naxos, Captain Wozzeck, Tito La clemenza di Tito, Simpleton Boris Godunov, Witch Hänsel und Gretel, Tikhon Kat’á Kabanová, Golitsyn Khovanshchina,Herod Salome, Laca Jenufa and Mal in the world premiere of James MacMillan’s The Sacrifice. Also in the UK he has sung Bardolfo Falstaff, Valzacchi Der Rosenkavalier, Monostatos Die Zauberflöte, Basilio Le Nozze di Figaro at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Mr Upfold Albert Herring, Idomeneo and Arbace Idomeneo, Brother Elusaf A Betrothal in a Monastery, Dr Caius Falstaff for Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Herod Salome for Opera North and Schoolmaster The Cunning Little Vixen for Scottish Opera.
International appearances include Arbace for the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Simon Rattle in Berlin, Lucerne, and at the Salzburg Festival, Desportes Die Soldaten in David Pountney’s production for the Ruhr Triennale, at the New National Theatre, Tokyo and at the Lincoln Centre in New York; Shapkin From the House of the Dead at the Wiener Festwochen, the Holland Festival, the Aix en Provence Festival and at the Staatsoper in Berlin; Tikhon for Grand Théâtre de Genève; Sellem in The Rake’s Progress for Opéra de Lausanne and at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées. He has also sung Luigi Nono’s Al gran sole carico d’amore for the Salzburg Festival and for the Staatsoper in Berlin, Shapkin From the House of the Dead in his debut at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Alviano Die Gezeichneten in Palermo, and Weinberg’s The Portrait at the Bregenz Festival.
Peter’s recent roles include Gregor The Makropulos Case, Faust in Terry Gilliam’s production of The Damnation of Faust, Raskatov’s A Dog’s Heart, Pedrillo Die Entführung auf dem Serail for Opéra de Nice, Vitek Vec Makropulos Salzburg Festival, Bob Boles Peter Grimes at La Scala, Die Zauberflöte for Covent Garden, Michel Julietta for English National Opera, Alwa Lulu for Welsh National Opera, and Il Prigioniero with the New York Philharmonic.
In Concert Peter has performed Das Lied von der Erde with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Daniel Harding with the Royal Flemish Philharmonic conducted by Daniele Callegari, in Brussels and Antwerp, and with the Fundacão OSESP in Sao Paulo, Tippett’s A Child of our Time with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Gerard Schwarz, Berlioz Romeo et Juliette with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, Janacek’s The Diary of One who Disappeared and Elliot Carter’s In sleep in thunder with Contrechamps in Geneva and at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and the Bochumer Symphoniker, Romeo et Juliette with the Bochumer Symphoniker, Judas Maccabaeus recorded for Anglia Television, Verdi Requiem (RLPO), La Damnation de Faust and Beethoven Symphony No 9 with the RTE National Symphony Orchestra (Ireland), The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny for the Edinburgh Festival, Aegisthus Elektra in concert performances for Opera North, Mahler’s8th Symphony with the Hallé and BBC Philharmonic Orchestra with Sir Mark Elder and Il Prigioniero and The Captain Wozzeck with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Esa Pekka Salonen.
Among his numerous recordings are Delius’ Song of the High Hills and Master of Ceremonies in Britten’s Gloriana conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras for Decca Records, Tichon Kat’a Kabanová with Carlo Rizzi, Bardolfo Falstaff with Sir Colin Davis for Chandos and Leonard Meryll Yeomen of the Guard with Sir Charles Mackerras and the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera for the Telarc label.
The 2013/2014 season includes Desportes Die Soldaten for Zurich Opera, Sharikov A Dog’s Heart for Opera National de Lyon, The Captain Wozzeck at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Creon The Thebans for English National Opera and Larry King Anna Nicole at Covent Garden, London.
