British lighting designer Paule Constable read English and drama at Goldsmiths, University of London, and trained in lighting design while working in the music business. Her extensive opera credits include the lighting for more than ten productions at Glyndebourne (including McVicar’s 2011 production of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), and productions at English National Opera, Metropolitan Opera, New York, and Welsh National Opera.

Constable made her Royal Opera debut in 1990 creating the revival lighting for The Cunning Little Vixen, directed by Bill Bryden. She has since created the lighting design for The Royal Opera’s productions of Rigoletto, Die Zauberflöte, Faust and Le nozze di Figaro, directed by David McVicar, Macbeth, directed by Phyllida Lloyd, and Carmen, directed by Francesca Zambello. For The Royal Ballet she created lighting designs for Will Tuckett’s The Seven Deadly Sins and his Elizabeth and, for ROH2, for Kim Brandstrup’s Goldberg – The Brandstrup-Rojo Project. In 2013 she co-directed The Canticles with Neil Bartlett in the Linbury Studio Theatre.

Constable works prolifically in theatre and has won multiple awards, including the 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2013 Olivier Awards for Best Lighting Design, and the 2011 and 2015 Tony Awards for Best Lighting Design of a Play (War Horse and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time). She campaigns for environmental awareness and aims in her work to use energy efficiently.
